Galveston family in car wreck after tire blowout

Galveston citizens are not strangers to tragic events. Tragedies can strike anywhere at any time, however, they can seem more tragic when an entire family is involved as we described in last week's blog posting.

Sadly, a Galveston family was involved in a fatal car accident on Interstate 45 just north of the causeway. A mother, father, son and daughter were in an SUV together when a tire blowout or other tire malfunction allegedly caused the mother, who was driving, to lose control of the car.

The one-car crash closed I-45 in both directions for several hours and resulted in one fatality.

According to news sources, the mother who was driving the car underwent surgery for head and neck injuries. She was reported in critical condition. The father was listed in stable condition and the 23-year old son is apparently in good condition. The 20-year-old daughter was thrown from the SUV during the rollover crash and died as a result of her injuries. The authorities stated that she was not wearing her seatbelt.

The cause of the crash, according to the preliminary investigation, has something to do with the tire. The tire tread apparently separated from the tire, which may have led to the crash.

If the tire is determined to be defective in some way, the tire manufacturer could be held liable for damages to the family, including pain and suffering. Wrongful death litigation may also be pursued.

Witnesses at the scene described one of the victims as receiving cardiopulmonary resuscitation efforts. It was not reported which of the injured family members that may have been. An investigation is ongoing.
