Galveston take note: 10 dangerous products you may own (Part One)

When there are injuries associated with a product because it is poorly designed or defective in some way, there is often a product recall. The company may try to get the word out that the product has been recalled, and yet there may be hundreds of thousands products in Galveston or elsewhere that are owned by consumers and ready to cause a personal injury.

When a defective or dangerous product causes a personal injury to someone, the manufacturer or the retailer or both may be held liable for damages including pain and suffering or wrongful death.

A recently published news report listed ten common products that are dangerous and which may be in your home. Here are the first five products:

  1. LG Dehumidifiers have wiring which has been known to catch on fire. 100,000 humidifiers are in peoples' homes.
  2. Drop side cribs, sold under a variety of brand names, can trap the baby's head and cause strangulation. More than 30 deaths have occurred due to drop side cribs.
  3. Auto Fire Target Sets with soft darts. About 1.8 million sets are in consumers' hands. Two young boys choked to death on the when the darts became lodged in their throats.
  4. There are more than 2 million jugs of Gel Fuel that have been sold. The fuel can pool, unlike a liquid, and catch fire. At least two individuals are known to have died due to burns.
  5. Roman shades and roll up blinds, sold under a variety of brand names, have suffocated children who get caught in their cords.

Are any of these in your home? If so, the typical procedure is to return them to the store for an exchange with a similar product or ask for a refund. The manufacturers' website should provide you with guidance as to disposal or refunds.

Our next posting will continue with an additional five dangerous consumer products that may be in your home.
