Police sergeant may be at fault in auto accident

Auto accidents often result in more than property damage. Galveston County residents involved in car accidents can sustain serious injuries that require long-term care.

A 51-year-old police sergeant remains in critical condition after being involved in a car accident in the early morning hours of Nov. 19. Authorities say the officer was responding to a call about a stabbing when he ran into the vehicle of a 23-year-old woman who was returning home after going to a movie with friends.

The young woman sustained a broken arm and is alert and responsive, according to media reports. The police officer had to be cut out of his vehicle and transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston via Life Flight. He is expected to recover but was listed in critical but stable condition at the time this post is being written.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office says the accident is under internal investigation, but a spokesman says the deputy may have caused the accident. He notes the officer allegedly struck the young woman's suburban after running a red light. Although he was responding to an emergency call, the police officer was reportedly the fourth patrol unit responding and still had a duty to travel safely on the roadways.

Because the accident occurred while he was on duty, it is likely the city's insurance company will be responsible for paying for damages if the officer is found to be liable. The sergeant could also be sued personally by the woman in order to obtain compensation for the pain and suffering she endured.
