Wrong-way head-on vehicle crash results in fatality

A car accident can have serious, long-term effects when it results in injury or a fatality. There are, of course, the debilitating results of physical injury and loss of life that can lead to civil liability and claims. Additionally, depending on the level of driver negligence on the part of the individual determined to be responsible for causing the accident, criminal charges may be applied.

Though penalties may differ according to state, Texas residents might find the details of a recent car accident pertinent. It happened in a state further west, but the same sorts of accidents often occur on the streets and highways here.

Officials say the accident occurred at approximately 1 a.m. on Dec. 29, when a 23-year-old woman suspected of driving under the influence, drove along a California freeway in the wrong direction. While heading westbound in the eastbound lanes, her three-quarter-ton pickup truck collided head-on with a 1972 Volkswagen Beetle being driven by a 25-year-old man. The Beetle was totaled in the collision.

Responding California Highway Patrol officers and medical crews declared the driver of the small car dead at the scene. The pickup truck's driver suffered moderate injuries in the crash and received treatment at a local hospital before being booked into Las Colinas Detention Facility on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter and DUI. She was scheduled to appear in court to face the charges on Jan. 3. There was no word at the time this post was written as to what might have occurred at that appearance.

The family of the Beetle driver likely has the right to pursue a wrongful death suit against the woman driving the truck. Money awarded as a result of a successful suit might prove helpful in defraying expenses resulting from the accident. Compensation might also be possible for other losses, such as potential wages and loss of consortium of the man's loved ones.
