Hair straightening formula found to have cancer-causing agent

Texas fashionistas may be interested to hear that the Brazilian Blowout Acai Professional Smoothing Hair Solution, a product that permanently straightens hair, was found to have high levels of formaldehyde. This chemical, which is often used in building materials and to preserve human remains, is colorless and flammable. More importantly, it is also a cancer causing agent, which makes the solution a potentially dangerous product.

The treatment turns curly hair into sleek and straight hair. It lasts up to three months before the treatment needs to be used again in order to straighten newly grown hair. However, there have been some side effects associated with the treatment, including upper respiratory tract infections and nose bleeds. When the product was investigated for its formaldehyde concentration, it was found to contain 12 percent. The recommendation is no more than one-tenth of a percent.

It has been known for several decades that exposure to formaldehyde could cause certain cancers. Several studies have actually linked formaldehyde to cancers that occur within the upper respiratory tract, including nasal cancer. Other research indicates that there may be a connection between the strong-smelling chemical and leukemia. To further state the dangers of formaldehyde, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) took measures to limit the amount of exposure of formaldehyde for workers.

When products become available to the public, consumers are led to believe that the products have been tested and are safe for use. However, this is not always the case. If someone becomes injured due to a product that they were using, they may be able to obtain compensation for their injury if they can prove that they were using the product as it was intended. An experienced Texas attorney may be able to help with a product liability claim.
