Sideswipe and rear-end common big rig crashes around Houston

There are not nearly as many 18-wheelers on the road as there are personal vehicles. But as we have said before in this blog, big rigs more than make up for their small numbers by their sheer size. They are so big that if they are involved in any sort of accident on the highways around Texas, chances are good that the damage done will be greater than might be expected otherwise.

Even if the damage is limited to just the vehicles, you can be sure that the cost estimate will come in higher. The chances of someone being injured or killed in a crash with a semitrailer truck also tend to be higher just by virtue of the weight class difference.

And because of the nature of the structure of the trucking industry, it can be difficult for a victim or their loved ones to know where to begin to ensure that all the responsible parties are held accountable. That's one of the many reasons why the most common recommendation after someone has been in an accident is that they should contact an experienced attorney.

Just how common are accidents in our area? Well, Houston's KPRC recently compiled some data in this regard and the numbers might stagger the minds of many readers. The station looked at accidents in the Houston area since 2012 and found there have been some 1,700 of them. And sideswipe and rear-end crashes have been the most common.

But as experienced Galveston-area personal injury attorneys know, big rig accidents aren't the only type to be concerned about. Container trucks and other big units, such as cement trucks and those hauling hazardous materials, can all pose hazards. If owners and operators fail to properly load them, secure their loads, maintain the vehicles or abide by hours of service rules, the chances of accidents increase.
