Tips for motorcycle safety

There are few things a motorcyclist loves more than the feeling of being on the open road on two wheels. However, a motorcycle accident can happen in an instant and with catastrophic results. From life-altering injuries to deaths, motorcycle accidents claimed 4,668 lives in 2013, the latest year for which statistics are available.

In many accidents, the motorcyclist was not at fault. In these cases, the biker, and if applicable, an injured passenger has a right to seek compensation. This might include compensation for medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages, disability and more.

There are a few tips that can help motorcyclists be a bit safer while on the road. These include:

-- Make sure you're seen. From using your headlight during the day and night, flashing your brake light when you're starting to reduce speed or stopping and using your horn, you do have ways to let another motorist know you are there.

-- Dress appropriately. Wearing a DOT-approved helmet is one of the most important pieces of equipment for a motorcyclist. Leather shirts, jackets, pants and gloves can help bikers reduce the incidence of road rash.

-- Get familiar with your motorcycle. The best way to do so is by taking a motorcycle safety class and to practice. Know how to handle your motorcycle on wet roads, on uneven surfaces and in high winds.

-- Use effective mental strategies. Always search for changing conditions, whether it is in the weather, road conditions or with a motor vehicle. Obey the traffic laws. Don't drive when you're under the influences of drugs or alcohol.

These are just a few of the tips that can help keep you safe on the roads. You will learn your own tricks and tips the more you ride. To learn more about motorcycle accidents and your rights, please visit our webpages on the topics.
