2 Texas women awarded nearly $40,000 by jury

According to court documents, a jury returned a verdict of approximately $40,000 in favor of two plaintiffs suing another driver for negligence. The women, who are both from Port Arthur, were seeking between $200,000 and $1,000,000.

Reportedly, the accident happened on Aug. 10, 2013 at the intersection of FM366 and Magnolia Street. The women were traveling north and the man allegedly turned left in front of them without yielding the right of way. They claimed that the accident and their injuries was thus caused by the man's negligent actions.

The jury awarded one woman $3,226.17 for medical bills, $18,500 for pain and suffering, $1,500 for impairment and $100 for wages she lost. The other woman was awarded $6,386.48 for her medical bills, $10,000 for pain and suffering and $200 for her lost income. It is unclear whether the defendant will appeal the jury's verdict. Sources also do not indicate if any settlement offer had been extended in the case before trial.

People who are injured in car accidents may want to get help from a personal injury attorney who will make a determination as to whether or not another driver was negligent. If so, the attorney may then try to negotiate with the driver's insurance company in order to recover the maximum amount possible. Most personal injury cases are able to be resolved through settlement without having to go through trial. However, if the amount offered by the insurance company is insufficient, the attorney may determine that the filing of a personal injury lawsuit would be advisable. Damages that might be sought could include lost wages and medical expenses, among other amounts.
