Multiple deaths reported after bus crash

The driver of a charter bus lost control of the vehicle and caused an accident that left eight dead and more than 40 people injured. It took place on May 14 just south of the Webb/Dimmit county line on Highway 83, and the bus was headed to Eagle Valley from San Juan in Texas. Of those who died, seven died at the scene of the crash while one more person died while at the hospital.

Authorities said that 22 people were taken to Laredo Medical Center while another 7 of the 51 passengers on the bus were taken to another hospital. There was no word on the severity of their injuries. Authorities weren't immediately sure how the accident occurred, but it was noted that it had been raining at the time of the accident.

Weather conditions have been known to be involved in traffic accidents. While some collisions on slick roads are unavoidable, sometimes drivers play a part by driving at a rate of speed that fails to take into account the possibility of a skid as a result of applying brakes too quickly.

When a motor vehicle accident results in the loss of a loved one, the decedent's surviving family members often face significant financial burdens in addition to their grief. The short-term consequences of having to meet funeral and burial costs are difficult enough, but in many cases the decedent was the primary breadwinner or otherwise contributed to family finances. When the accident was due to the negligence of another driver, an attorney might suggest the filing of a wrongful death lawsuit seeking compensation for these and other losses.
