What parents should be worried about on prom night

If your teenager is excited about going to the prom, chances are that they are not alone. For many teens, the prom is going to be the best night of their lives. In preparing for such an epic night, they may be worried about what they will wear, if they can afford it, where they may have dinner and if they can stay out late enough to enjoy the after party.

At the same time, parents may be just as worried about the decisions their children may (or may not) make during the evening. If you think you’re in the minority if you are concerned, chances are that many other parents share your concerns. In fact,  post will highlight a few reasons why parents and their teen drivers should have serious talks about prom night and the use of drugs and alcohol.

Drugs and alcohol use is more common than you may think – A survey of teens aged 16 to 19 conducted by AAA found that  41 percent of teens said that they were going to get drunk on prom night.

Teens are more likely to drive drunk than to call for help – Similarly,  teen drivers said that they would get behind the wheel while drunk (or buzzed as they would say) than to call their parents for help; believing that would be penalized for drinking while underage

As such, it is critically important for parents to have honest and frank conversations about the dangers of drug and alcohol use on prom night, especially considering the number of young people killed in auto accidents during the last months of school.
