Texas woman admits to driving drunk

A 25-year-old Texas woman is facing vehicular assault and manslaughter charges after a crash in the early morning hours of June 18 that left one of her passengers dead and two others injured. Police say that the woman admitted to smoking marijuana and drinking heavily before getting behind the wheel. The accident took place in El Paso at the intersection of George Dieter Drive and Zaragoza Road at approximately 2:00 a.m.

According to police, the woman lost control of her car as she rounded a bend in the road. She is said to have told officers at the scene that she was traveling at between 65 and 70 mph at the time. The woman and two of her passengers were ejected from the vehicle after it struck a number of utility poles and parked cars.

First responders pronounced a woman who had been sitting in the rear of the Kia Optima dead at the scene. The woman along with a front-seat passenger incurred what were described as non-life-threatening injuries. A second rear-seat passenger had his seat belt on at the time of the accident and remained in the vehicle. He was transported to a hospital with broken ribs and a spinal injury.

Those who are unfamiliar with law enforcement and have rarely been in trouble often feel the need to confess and show remorse when dealing with the police. They do this because they hope that being candid will secure them more lenient treatment. Admissions of guilt made at the scene of a drunk driving crash could be used by experienced personal injury attorneys to establish liability in civil lawsuits brought on behalf of accident victims.
