Drunk driver hits car and kills campers

Texas law enforcement authorities reported that a horrific accident involving a drunk driver claimed the lives of two people. The accident reportedly happened on a beach on Padre Island around 1 a.m. on July 20.

According to police officials, a married couple was sleeping in a tent on the beach with their car parked next to the site where they were camping. A 21-year-old man was allegedly driving his truck along the beach near mile marker 240 while he was under the influence of alcohol. Police report that the man struck the couple's car, causing the car to spin around and to then run over the couple as they slept inside of their tent.

Emergency medical personnel pronounced the couple dead at the accident scene. A dog that was present and inside of the car was apparently not injured. The man who caused the accident was arrested for intoxication manslaughter and taken into custody. Police indicate that he did not suffer any injuries in the wreck. The couple had reportedly moved to Corpus Christi and were temporarily staying on the beach, according to their friends.

People who are killed in accidents caused by drunk drivers often leave their families reeling from the grief and financial expenses they have suffered as a result. Families might want to file wrongful death lawsuits against the drunk drivers while the criminal matters are still pending. Texas law recognizes that the families of those who are killed deserve to be compensated for their losses and allows civil and criminal prosecutions to proceed simultaneously. A personal injury attorney may help draft the civil complaint, listing all of the legal grounds upon which the claim might be based. Damages that are typically sought include funeral and burial expenses and loss of financial contributions.
