Documents to gather following a car crash

As some Texas drivers know, car accidents can lead to many physical and monetary costs. Many victims turn to personal injury attorneys for help obtaining compensation for damages. Before the attorney files a lawsuit, however, they may need certain documents.

To determine if the person seeking compensation was liable for the accident, the attorney will want any available evidence from the crash itself. These documents may include an accident report from the authorities who responded to the crash. This report usually includes an initial impression from the officer, a diagram of the car crash scene, how many vehicles were involved and if there were any pedestrians present when the crash occurred. If the person was given a ticket, the attorney should know and have access to the citation. Additionally, any information that was gathered from witnesses or other drivers involved should be included.

In addition to documents relating to the accident, the personal injury attorney will also need the person's insurance policy. If the injured person does not have a copy of their policy, the attorney may be able to request it from the insurance provider. Furthermore, receipts showing that the policy holder paid the premiums will help show that the policy was in force at the time the accident occurred.

When a person suffers injuries in a car crash, they could face a long recovery period and high medical costs. If the other driver was liable for causing the accident, a personal injury attorney might assist in seeking compensation for the costs associated with the accident. If the attorney cannot reach a settlement through negotiations with the insurance company that covers the costs of the accident outside of court, they may take the case to trial.
