Focus is on commercial truck safety in Safe Driver Week

Texas truck drivers may be aware that Oct. 16 is the start of Safe Driver Week. Aimed at drivers of passenger vehicles and commercial motor vehicles, the initiative is sponsored by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is also involved as are several law enforcement bodies.

The aim of the week is to increase awareness about safety behavior. Law enforcement will also focus on greater enforcement of laws around seat belts, speeding, improper lane changes, distracted driving, following too closely and other offenses.

According to the "Large Crash Truck Causation Study" done by the FMCSA, 93 percent of crashes in passenger vehicles and about 88 percent of commercial truck crashes are the fault of the commercial vehicle driver. The initiative is designed to reduce deaths and injuries in these crashes involving cars, trucks and buses and to create strategies to deal with behaviors that are high risk.

A person who is injured in a truck accident may want to consult an attorney. Injuries from truck accidents may be particularly serious due to the size of the vehicle, but people should also keep in mind that the seriousness of the injury might not be immediately apparent. For example, this may sometimes be the case with a traumatic brain injury. An attorney may be able to offer advice on documenting injuries and getting compensation. In some cases, an insurance company's offer might not cover medical expenses. If this occurs, it might be necessary to file a lawsuit against the driver and the company the driver was working for at the time of the crash.
