21.5 percent of trucks ordered out of service in inspection blitz

In June, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance conducted its annual road check campaign to inspect trucks in Texas and throughout the country. In October, the organization released a report of the inspections, showing areas where improvements are needed in the trucking industry.

The CVSA reports that inspectors completed 62,796 inspections of which 42,236 were the most comprehensive types that are performed. During the 72-hour campaign, 21.5 percent of the trucks were ordered out of service for safety violations. Among drivers, 3.4 percent were ordered out of service because of violations that included falsifications of logbooks, hours-of-service violations and disqualifications. Hours-of-service violations led the reasons for driver out-of-service orders at 46.8 percent.

A total of 9,080 trucks and 1,436 drivers were placed out of service. The truck safety violations that led to out-of-service orders included brakes at 45.7 percent, tires and wheels at 18.5 percent, lights at 11.8 percent and improper securement of cargo at 6.1 percent. Other truck safety violations combined totaled less than 5 percent of the trucks that were placed out of service.

A tractor-trailer crash has the potential for causing loss of life and severe injury. Because of the dangers of large trucks, the industry is subject to numerous regulations. When truck drivers and companies violate them, they place others who are sharing the roadways with them at risk. People who are seriously injured in truck accidents may be left facing a lifetime of disability and a permanent loss of the ability to earn incomes. They may thus want to meet with an attorney to see how best to seek compensation for their losses.
