Drunk driving accidents all too common during the holiday season

Sadly, drunk driving accidents are nothing new on our nation's roads. In fact, 2016 could potentially be one of the deadliest years for drunk driving accidents in history, with an average of 28 people losing their lives every day because of an intoxicated driver's bad decisions.

For every person that is killed in a drunk driving crash, more are seriously injured. Advocacy group and anti-drunk driving watchdog organization Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) estimates that someone is injured every two minutes in a drunk driving-related crash. That averages out to nearly 263,000 injuries per year, all because of drunk driving.

The number of injuries and fatalities alone don't tell the full story of these tragic and preventable accidents. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that drunk driving accidents cost the U.S. economy an astounding $52 billion a year because of:

  • Medical expenses
  • Property damage
  • Lost wages
  • Lost earning potential and household contributions (of both those killed and those seriously injured)
  • Loss of consortium
  • Lost productivity
  • Funeral expenses
  • Life insurance payouts
  • Other related costs

Drunk driving accidents peak at various points throughout the calendar year. One of the times they are most common is right now: the last week in December and the first week in January. In particular, New Year's Eve and early on New Year's Day are when many drunk driving crashes are seen as revelry and too much "holiday cheer" take their toll on drivers who choose to get behind the wheel anyway.

Why this matters to you

If you - or someone you love - will be out on the roads of Texas or anywhere else in America at any point during the year, you run the risk of being involved in an accident with a drunk driver. Yes, there are "peaks" of activity for these crashes, but they can happen anywhere, and at any time of day.

Recovering much-needed and well-deserved compensation after a drunk driving accident injury can be difficult and complicated. There is usually a corollary criminal justice proceeding that can make settling the civil issues more potentially risky for the defendant, so an insurance company or criminal defense attorney may be dragging their feet. If you or someone you love has been injured by a drunk driver, contact a local personal injury attorney with experience handling these complex cases; doing so will give you a statistically greater chance of a successful outcome that adequately compensates you for the losses you have suffered.
