Thousands of truckers cited during safety campaign

From Oct. 16 to 22, commercial vehicle drivers in Texas were under increased scrutiny by law enforcement officers. The weeklong safety campaign, 2016 Operation Safe Driver Week, was put on by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance. During the nationwide effort, law enforcement officers conducted 20,648 traffic stops and issued 19,657 warnings and citations in the U.S.

Both commercial and passenger car drivers were targeted during Operation Safe Driver Week. Almost 75 percent of the citations that were issued over the weeklong campaign concerned moving violations. Speeding was among the most common reasons for citations as it accounted for almost 20 percent of the warnings and citations that were issued to CMV drivers. Over 39 percent of the warnings and citations that were issued to passenger car drivers were for speeding violations.

Besides speeding and moving violations, other common reasons for citations during the safety campaign were failure to obey traffic control devices, failure to use seat belts and using a handheld phone while driving. Inattentive or careless driving was the fifth most common reason that passenger car drivers were issued citations and warnings. The number of CMV drivers that were pulled over during this annual campaign declined for the second year in a row.

Serious truck accidents can occur when commercial truck drivers engage in unsafe driving behaviors. A person who gets injured in such an accident may claim monetary compensation from the at-fault truck driver and the truck driver's employer by filing a personal injury lawsuit. An attorney may help an accident victim identify all of the parties that are liable and pursue appropriate compensation for damages.
