Chain Reaction: Head Injuries And Your "Master" Genes Wreak Havoc

Diagnosis of a head injury after an accident or a fall is just the first step in a long road to recovery and treatment. Every day, scientists are making new discoveries about the long-term effects of head injuries.

It is important to develop a better understanding of the impact that head injuries have on long-term prognosis, every day functions and the development of other medical conditions. Only then will medical professionals be able to develop better diagnostic tools and treatments.

A recent study performed at the University of California in Los Angeles discovered that head injuries may cause damage to certain "master" genes. These master genes are linked to hundreds of other genes known to be associated with developing neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. UPI summarized the study in a helpful article which explains why this study is significant.

Basically, when a head injury occurs, it can cause a chain reaction in other genes - from the master genes to the genes they control - which increases a person's risk of developing the following:

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Autism spectrum disorder (ASD)
  • Depression
  • Schizophrenia
  • Stroke
  • Alzheimer's
  • Parkinson's

Researchers determined that the damage occurs one of two ways, but that ultimately, the genes do not work properly.

What this study touches on is the importance of sound medical information to support your diagnosis and treatment options. The study of head injuries is still evolving and some medical experts understand the current state of research and treatment better than others. Your diagnosis is just the first step in ensuring you have the proper care long-term.

If you have suffered a head injury, knowing what medical experts you may need to present your case in litigation is also critical to ensuring that you receive enough compensation to account for any long-term damage that may present itself down the road. Head injuries may not manifest outward symptoms, so getting a medical expert to explain what is occurring inside your body and what may develop is critical to getting a favorable outcome.

Meet with an attorney to find out how they can work with medical experts to get you the compensation you deserve in your head injury case
