What should I ask my lawyer after a car crash?

After getting into an injurious car crash, plaintiffs may be able to seek financial compensation in court. Everyone knows this, so when someone feels particularly wronged following an auto collision, the first thing they'll do is search Google for local car accident lawyers.

When you start reaching out to personal injury lawyers, though, you're entering into an entirely new field of business. You'll want to evaluate each lawyer you speak with (1) from the perspective of whether you get along and can work with him or her, and (2) from a logical business perspective regarding the potential costs of the lawyer's services.

9 questions to ask a potential personal injury attorney

One of the best ways to ensure that your experience with your lawyer is a beneficial one is to bravely ask him or her the questions that come to mind during your initial meetings. Don't be shy when asking questions, no matter how embarrassing you think they might be.

To prime your question-asking pump, here are a few things you'll definitely want to address with your lawyer during the first meeting:

1. How many personal injury cases have you brought to trial, and how many of these cases achieved a favorable result for your client?

2. Do you regularly handle personal injury lawsuits, and what percentage of your claims fall under the category of my case?

3. How long have you been actively working as a personal injury attorney

4. Do you expect any challenges that could arise in the pursuit of my particular case? What are the downsides of my claim for damages?

5. Will you be the direct contact for my case? Or will I be speaking with a paralegal or another attorney? And will you be handling the litigation of my case, or will a paralegal or another lawyer be handling the litigation tasks?

6. What are the first steps you're going to take in my case, and what will your general strategy be? What will the legal process be like?

6. How long do you expect a case like mine to take before it's resolved?

7. How will I be compensating you? Am I paying on an hourly basis, contingency fee arrangement or will it be fixed fee? What kind of costs do you expect to incur in addition to legal fees?

8. Will you require expert witnesses or other experts to work on this case? What kinds and how much will they likely cost?

9. Do any statutes of limitation, or time limits, apply to the filing of my claim?

Choose your personal injury attorney wisely

Remember that if you have a viable claim for damages following a car accident, most personal injury lawyers will be happy to represent you in your claim. It will therefore be your job to select an attorney who is open and honest with your questions. You'll also want a lawyer who you feel comfortable with personally, and with whom you can get along during your litigation process.
