2016 was a deadly one on the nation's roadways. For the first time since 2007, more than 40,000 (40,200 to be exact) people were killed in motor vehicle accidents across the country. This represents a six percent rise over 2015, and a 14 percent increase from 2014.

Man sentenced for fatal drunk driving accident

A Texas man was sentenced to five years in prison for a drunk driving car accident that killed two women. A jury had previously convicted the man of manslaughter and aggravated assault. The accident that led to the charges occurred on Jan. 20, 2011 when the defendant collided with another vehicle at an intersection.

I-10 one of the nation's most dangerous freeways

Many Texas drivers regularly utilize Interstate 10, which stretches across the state from El Paso to Port Arthur, but motorists may not realize that I-10 is considered one of the country's most dangerous. At a length of 2,460 miles, Interstate 10 runs across eight states, and Texas contains the longest section of 879 miles, or about 35 percent of the interstate's total length. Consequently, the Texas section of I-10 is considered the most deadly stretch of the freeway.

Police in Texas say drunk driver responsible for fatal crash

A 30-year-old Texas man is facing an intoxication manslaughter charge after being involved in a high-speed crash that left a woman dead in northwest Harris County on Sept. 22. Deputies from the Harris County Sheriff's Office took the man into custody after toxicology testing performed at a Houston medical facility revealed that he had been intoxicated at the time of the accident.

Tractor-trailer head-on collision in Texas kills 3

Accident investigators in Texas are trying to determine what occurred in the moments leading up to a head-on collision between two semi-tractor trailers in Rockwall County that claimed the lives of three men on June 29. A representative of the Rockwall County Sheriff's Office said that investigators had yet to determine which driver was responsible and what could have caused the crash. The accident took place on Interstate 30 between Fate and Royce City at approximately 5:00 a.m.

Fatal wrong-way crash claims Texas woman's life

In Texas, a New Braunfels woman died after the car that she was driving was struck almost head on by a hit-and-run driver who was fleeing the scene of an unrelated crash on May 21. Both accidents were under investigation by local police, and criminal charges may be pending.

Multiple deaths reported after bus crash

The driver of a charter bus lost control of the vehicle and caused an accident that left eight dead and more than 40 people injured. It took place on May 14 just south of the Webb/Dimmit county line on Highway 83, and the bus was headed to Eagle Valley from San Juan in Texas. Of those who died, seven died at the scene of the crash while one more person died while at the hospital.
